of the Native American Indian Tribes of the Southwest

Sacred Stone of the Native American Indian Tribes of the Southwest

Native American Indian tribes of the southwest have a semi-precious stone that they believe is sacred. The sacred stone they believe to be sacred is turquoise. The reason the Native American tribes of the southwest believe the stone is sacred is because of it significance in religious ceremonies. Turquoise was first brought to Native American tribes of the southwest by trading. The trade routes would go as far as Central America. The traders would trade turquoise and other stones for goods as example textiles. Native American tribes of the southwest would then use the turquoise as ornaments in their religious ceremonies.

Navajo Indians are famous for creating exquisite pieces of art from turquoise and establish that into a way of living. Turquoise was not used as an ornament on silver jewelry until the late 1800’s. Turquoise was hand cut and fitted into silver jewelry by hand. Turquoise was rarely used in silver jewelry in the late 1800’s because of difficulty of cutting and setting the stone in turquoise. The use of turquoise in silver jewelry was until after better tools were available.

As the growth of silver jewelry grew across the globe, turquoise as a semi-precious stone grew as well. Turquoise is also a sacred stone to various other cultures around the world. Turquoise was used by ancient Egyptians in their treasures. Some Asian cultures also believed that turquoise as sacred stone as well. Today, Native American Indian tribes of the southwest still believe that turquoise was a sacred stone and use it in religious ceremonies

Petrogylphs.com
